Functional Strength Training is a term used to describe exercises that help you perform regular daily activities more easily. These exercise are know as compound movements and use multiple joints, which recruits more muscles and emphasize control and strength. By optimizing these movements during training, like squatting, reaching or carrying objects, one can see improvements in quality of life while also reducing the risk of injury.
How is this different than “non-functional” training? Bodybuilding typically focuses on isolated movements to improve the aesthetics, typically for competitions, but have minimal benefit when performing regular daily activities. Other programs place a heavy focus on one type of fitness, like cardiovascular endurance, although real life requires all components of fitness.
